The South Sweet Refrains Limited Vinyl LP

Overview:
Sweet Refrains is the debut album from The South, a band consisting of the no longer “Beautiful” Dave Hemingway and Ali Wheeler along with pals from The Beautiful South’s recording and touring days and a few fresh faces.

Sweet Refrains is a brilliant record which manages to be contemporary yet also tips a respectful hat to the glorious past that this band’s name inevitably invokes.

From the merry-go-round opening of Second Coming, a wonderfully tongue-in-cheek antidote to the seemingly endless self-aggrandising band comebacks, through to the final life affirming warm fuzz soul of Thank You, Sweet Refrains is full of gloriously irresistible melodies and an idiosyncratic lyrical wit to match.

This is not all just music to dance around your living room to however (not that there is too much wrong with that), there are also more honest open introverted moments such as the beautiful hangover ballad Devil In My Wine and the magnificent Sweet Refrain - twisting in dark harmonic sophistication as it tells the story of an abusive relationship.

Since 2009 The South have been quietly selling out shows across the UK and songs such as Stick It In And Turn It and Pigeonhole featured here now sit regularly and comfortably alongside some of the most famous hits from The Beautiful South’s canon.

“Sweet Refrains is an album that shrugs off its shadows and falls in love with music all over again” R2 Magazine
