They have been called, amongst other things, "the best live band in Britain." Their music has graced everything from The Sopranos to The Simpsons, and celebrity fans include Irvine Welsh and the world's biggest selling author, Stephen King. They are undoubtedly the greatest American act the UK ever did produce, and their heady combination of techno and C&W, alongside a proclivity for rock 'n' roll decadence and an acute social conscience means that they are effectively a unique entity in modern music.
The band's nucleus of Rob Spragg and Jake Black met three decades ago, towards the end of the 1980s at a south London house party. They would assume American accents and conceal their bloodshot eyes behind wraparound sunglasses. At their core they would write classic American blues rock yet extend off in any direction their whims took them. It was a plan, and they ran with it.
The band's celebrated debut album Exile on Coldharbour Lane sounded, as you would by now expect, like nothing else. A wonderful, genre-defying album whose infamous track, 'Woke Up This Morning', would go on to have a very unlikely eternal life when TV producer David Chase chose it as the theme tune to The Sopranos.
In Exile on Coldharbour Lane's wake, the band spread their musical tentacles. They went on to release five studio albums all of which boasted elements of, as Love calls it, "hungover addled euphoria”.
