IN THE same way that the Olympics shifts from country to country, so the ‘Rock‘n’Roll Capital Of The World’ is forever changing town. In the ’80s, it was Los Angeles, in the ’90s Seattle, and now, in 2007, it’s Helsinki.
In fact, it’s Finland in general. A country of just five million inhabitants, a vast percentage of whom appear to be in guitar-heavy bands – bands with the instinctive ability to combine the traditions of rock with the more cutting-edge manoeuvres of the new millennium. These are rock bands who actually look the part – as in long hair, sombre attire and guitars that are as likely to be Flying V’ed as not.
Enter Children Of Bodom; the five piece outfit from Espoo in Finland who, since the latter part of the ’90s, have been building a reputation as genuine market leaders. Originally called Inearthed, COB can be as downright brutal as any of the extreme Metallers when the occasion demands, but what places these guys on the cusp of breaking into the Big League once and for all is the way they can suddenly dish up HUGE swathes of melody and instantly memorable choruses –plus of course the sort of musicianship that has seen vocalist/guitarist Alexi ‘Wild Child’ Laiho gracing the front cover of guitar mags around the world.
Over the past decade, Laiho & Co. have released half-adozen albums (five studio, one live), and now it’s time for Studio Album Number Six – the muchanticipated ‘Blooddrunk’, also the title of this lead-off single. With combined catalogue sales now easily topping the half million mark worldwide, this still young outfit (packed to the brim with experience plus a ready supply of great songs) find themselves perfectly placed to make 2008 their most successful year to date.
