Iron Maiden was formed on Christmas Day 1975, by Steve Harris. Founding member and bassist Steve Harris, and guitarist Dave Murray, remain the longest-surviving members of Iron Maiden. They have been joined over the years by Bruce Dickinson, Adrian Smith, Janick Gers and Nicko McBrain.
Iron Maiden had been playing for three years, before they recorded their first demo, on New Year's Eve 1978, called The Soundhouse Tapes. The band sold all five thousand copies within weeks and have been breaking records with their vinyl, CDs and DVDs ever since.
Their current record sales stand at over 80 million albums worldwide. This outstanding achievement was recognised by Iron Maiden winnnig the Ivor Novello award for international achievement in 2002.
The band are commited to playing live for as many fans as possible and at the end of Iron Maiden's current tour, in June 2007 they will have played 2,000 concerts over a period of 31 years.
Iron Maiden's mascot, Eddie, is a perennial fixture in the band's horror-influenced album cover art, as well as in live shows.
